Chapter 4: Revelations of Synchronicity: The God Wink

Every enlightened being from the beginning of civilization has had to have experienced synchronicity. It is the touchstone, the philosophers stone, it’s the alchemical transformation turning lead to gold, the initial soul knowing, the awakening to the divine found inside confirmed outside.

1

The following, written by me, Greg Johnson aka @liongrey333 on Instagram, a Gnostic Christian, writer and poet describes the power of synchronicity and how it can become a tool for self-awareness and enlightenment.

2

His name was Amato, he was a Panamanian Indian and turned me on to my first LSD experience.  He warned me before I slipped the tab of acid on my tongue -that it was unlike any other drug I did before. Not a downer, not an upper. It was different and surreal. People have cooked their babies in ovens thinking it was a turkey he warned me. They’ve jumped off the side of buildings thinking they were Superman. Reality’s lines get blurred. People see trails of colors and auras. So remember its a trip, a mind trip.
Amato was the kindest coolest guy you’d ever want to know, a long haired, cool ass cat, He was a year or two older than me and was our goalie on our soccer team, of which there were a handful of freaks that were on the team. He lived in my neighborhood, he was adopted by his father who was an ambassador or something who was absolutely sweet as honey and also had that easy cheerful disposition that his son had. He was rarely home it seemed to me, Amato had the run of his wing of the house.

He explained it would produce a mind-expanding, mind-altering experience. It’s a carnival ride. So just be cool.

3

Everyone wants a good trip. No one wants a bad one.
Yet the nature of LSD is that it unlocks your subconscious and you lose all control. For the duration of the trip you see things that are inside of you that you didn’t know were there, reflected in the outside world.
In anticipation of things yet to come, we smoked a couple of bong hits as I sat on the couch staring at the TV.  Amato went to go take a shower getting ready for another Saturday night, it was late afternoon. As I was watching a small TV in his den, I started to see the wallpaper start to breathe. I looked back at the TV, it was normal, I looked back at the wallpaper, and it morphed into a moving, breathing, montage of ghost-like skeletons. Everything else in the room remained normal, except for my new found visitors. Petrifying!
It was a glimpse of the spirit world of trapped spirits outside of bodies, it was overwhelming, but a door was opened, and in time I had to go back and find out the secrets that only dead men know.
4
There is some good and some bad inside and outside of everyone of us. For most of the time we try to show the world the good and hide the bad.
So, how is an LSD trip similar to the experience of a synchronistic moment?
The nature of the LSD trip is akin to a waking dream that you can’t get out of, though you can possibly direct with your thoughts or surroundings. The nature of the synchronicity experience is that you are in a waking dream, you have no control over the situation accept to record it and notice that its specially customized for you.

The  probability quotient staggering your rational mind, to realize you are more than skin and bone, and are intrinsically connected inside and outside of you , to the eternal Presence .

It starts with what we believe deep down inside. It is something that is awaiting to come out of you.  The nature of all of the myths that we believe on this sojourn called life,  is our imagined reality of what we supposed it is, colliding with a unified field of what it really is, the alarm bell of being…
5
Ever since the Cognitive Revolution, we (sync Sapiens) have been living in a dual reality. On the one hand, the objective reality of rivers, trees and lions; and on the other hand, the imagined reality of Gods, nations and corporations.  As time went by, the imagined reality became ever more powerful, so that today the very survival of rivers, trees and lions depends on the grace of imagined entities such as the United States and Google. Reference Sapiens book by Yuval Noah Harari.
Also, the reason why synchronicity is so important especially in this day and age is that we are no longer in tribal societies.  The institutions that kept a spiritual connectedness for us are disintegrating. . .the breakdown of the churches, science rationalism over spirituality, all of that.
When you have an uncanny coincidence that is absolutely unique to you with thoughts and connectors that are just beyond the beyond, it is a calling out to you to be aware that there is a hidden world that is awaiting you, that will help you understand, that you do exist outside of your body in a spirit plane. In the consciousness of eternity.   When you experience synchronicity, you are lifted to a transcendental place that is awe-inspiring, similar to a psychedelic trip, it renews your faith in the Cosmos.

Whether we are tripping on LSD or just day tripping through life, the synchronistic moment, is a doorway, a glimpse, a crease in your universe that can open us into the wonder of it all.

I went off the deep end and was hospitalized with a dangerously high fever after three weeks of touring with the Grateful Dead. I have a problem where the lines between the dream state and the societal real world blur.  I usually push it past the point of worrying how I’m going to or if I’m going to land. Trying to hitch to the airport in an ornery state, two cops pick me up and drive me to the local psychiatric rehabilitation facility.
It was Denver after the ‘91 mile high show with Santana.  It was the end of summer and the medical team had me catheterized and on IV fluids and antibiotics. Once I was stabilized I wanted out of there.  I began to grow very impatient. It’s the oh no, one flew over the coo coo’s nest again, trip.  The waiting around to speak with doctors, the medication making me sluggish and drowsy.
I began planning my escape.  For a second I imagined that some of the staff were alien beings that were studying us.  I threw it out of my head because a simple bender, a momentary loss of self, deemed unacceptable behavior, that got me there in the first place, could turn into true neurosis, true insanity.   I did not belong there. It was awful. I had to get out. I found a weak link in security and in my hospital gown one sunny morning, I began my stealth moves for release.
Winding and ducking through gates, timing my slippery escape through the hospital halls,  I found my way to the front door and within moments, I was staring up at the blue skies and breathing the fresh morning air. Still feeling physically weak, I realized that I would have to have a better plan if I was going to make my way out to the highway and continue my quest to California.
Sure I was on a mission impossible, but it was at this moment that I realized that I was absolutely mentally and physically unprepared for the journey ahead. I imagined myself having to find a clothing line of freshly laundered clothes to steal an outfit that looked presentable for the outside world, and hitchhike off.   How else would I assimilate on the road? I thought about all the other times that I had found myself in this predicament before and something inside me knew that running away was not the answer. There was a tug inside me that was telling me to stay and wait it out, do the time. I was still debating if I should bail or not, on the California dream, or get shipped back home to New York.

Sometimes synchronistic moments can help you make a decision instantly.

It was in this confused state that I took a deep breath and decided to take a few moments to get out of the front entryway to not get caught and go behind the building and enjoy the surroundings – the cool breeze, the smell of freshly cut grass and in the distance in the back of the building I saw a group of patients playing soccer. I began to walk toward the group when I was met by a counselor, a facility guard. Wanting to appear friendly and approachable, my gown tied in such a way that it wouldn’t look so “in-patient-y” I said hello. He greeted me and asked me my name. As I glanced at his badge to address him by his name and as my answer was coming out of my mouth I was astonished to see that his name tag was mine, Greg Johnson. What are the odds? Greg Johnson. He immediately assumed that I was disoriented and obviously a patient. The decision to stay was decided as he walked me back to the hospital entrance, my story is crazy, but it’s true, to that I can attest.
You have to know where your going, or as George Harrison sang in Any Road …
I keep traveling around the bend
There was no beginning, there is no end
It wasn’t born and never dies
There are no edges, there is no sides
Oh yea, you just don’t win
It’s so far out – the way out is in
Bow to God and call him Sir
But if you don’t know where you’re going
Any road will take you there
So, you are saying that synchronistic moments can lead us on the right Path? Help us solve our problems? Change course? Right our wrong thinking? Provide comfort in difficult times?
Synchronicity is a reflection of what happens inside of you. I present the Gnostic text from the hidden Gospel of Thomas.
But the kingdom is inside you and it is outside you.
When you know yourselves,  then you will be known,
and you will understand that you are children of the living father.
But if you do not know yourselves,
then you dwell in poverty and you are poverty
The synchronistic element experience allows you to peak into the knowledge that there is an ordered kingdom of the spirit and when it chimes inside and outside of you as random uncanny coincidences do, that is the beginning.
6
So are you saying that sometimes our deepest questions can be directly answered by our higher power through modern technology like the internet, the radio and can be found in ordinary conversations, sometimes with strangers?
Jesus said, “The seeker should not stop until he finds. When he does find he will be disturbed. After having been disturbed, he will be astonished. Then he will reign over everything.”  [Having reigned, he will rest.] Gnostic Gospels addition.

Time is not linear it happens all at once, all the time.

Synchronicity is when God folds time and circumstance into a snapshot of a moment. To clarify for you that you matter and you are part of eternity. There is always “Whoa”, those random events that I just experienced, coupled with what I was thinking, have no business being all together at once. That is why you notice them in the first place. They alarm you to say, what the hell was that?
Synchronicity is similar to an LSD experience without the drugs.  It is as if God is doing a trip on you (a trip in your head? with your head?). Weird moments (colliding in your brain) where you experience something that has been referred to as “intellectual intuition.”  You see . . .
Synchronicity cannot be attained by mere intellectual means. It is an autonomous phenomenon that is not invented by the intellect, but rather, experienced.
Synchronicity is a self produced image spontaneously blossoming from the psyche as a whole that simultaneously reflects and effects what is going on within the very psyche that produced it. It has also been argued that Jungian psychology’s theory of synchronicity is equivalent to intellectual intuition.
7
The colliding of the most improbable timing – you are thinking something and then this happens and then that happens, then that happens and then it repeats itself.
After so many weird coincidences happen you finally realize you are getting contacted from the other side. The  other side, the Kingdom of Heaven, the world of dreams, for some, semantics aside, the higher self.  Synchronicity is ultimately defined differently for each and everyone of us, we are jigs in a jigsaw puzzle, we all just have to learn and play our part.
Can we get into states of consciousness where we are more open to synchronicity?
Obviously we need to balance, because no matter how much yoga, meditation or exercise, you get spun off into the busy-ness of work and life, never actually letting go and letting God in. It becomes your work, not God working through you.

God blows my mind all the time, so it looks like I am floating around, but I am in awe all the time. I am opening up to God all the time.

8

However whatever trip we are on, we all want to influence the outcomes. We look for clues to help us along the way. To let us know we are on the right Path.
To go back to my original statement, Synchronicity can be akin to a psychedelic experience. The autonomous nature of a synchronistic experience that one feels can sometimes seem so random yet so personal that it naturally sets one on a search, a quest for answers.
Did I stumble into a doorway inside of me that accesses the God Oracle?  or was that just a weird coincidence to be filed in the basket of the “strange but true” waste pail?

Rest assured some people are built to be cosmic sleuths, to decipher the code of the final frontier, who they are and what they are on this earth to do.

9

If you are of this genus, you will find telltales and signposts that awaken your spiritual consciousness, that will aid you to discover your own cosmic compass already inside of you that navigates through a divine timeline, not a linear one.

It comes from the hidden world of dream. It is a wakened state of dream, where the dreamer and dream become simultaneous expressions of the call of the strange.

Sanity calls for hedging but once you get a taste of the transcendent synchronistic experience, it reminds me of the lyrics of a Paul Simon song Sound of Silence
. . .the ‘vision softly creeping, left its seeds while I was sleeping, and the vision that was planted in my brain, still remains, within the sound of silence .’
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
The second stanza continues the Path of the initiate , ‘ in restless dreams I walked alone’ , until he sees the flash , sees the light , that awakens the sound of silence within , another synchronicity and being posited into the meditative vast nowness of answer, the transcendental kingdom of the eternal .

The first time I heard the term “synchronicity”,  I was 18, a freshman at UMass Amherst, and heard that Sting had a new album called Synchronicity, just the sound of the word was different, there seemed to be something else to it than being something that is synchronized like a factory assembly line, or the firing of gas, spark plug, and piston, and  I went to the dictionary.

There seems to be a timing belt of the universe that has been the most fascinating part about being alive, deciphering your code is to know thyself, to realize you’re connected to the All.

Most artists have been touched by it.
11
With one breath, with one flow
You will know
Synchronicity
A sleep trance, a dream dance
A shared romance
Synchronicity
A connecting principle
Linked to the invisible
Almost imperceptible
Something inexpressible
Science insusceptible
Logic so inflexible
Causally connectible
Yet nothing is invincible
If we share this nightmare
Then we can dream
Spiritus mundi
If you act, as you think
The missing link
Synchronicity
We know you, they know me
Extrasensory
Synchronicity
A star fall, a phone call
It joins all
Synchronicity
It’s so deep, it’s so wide
Your inside
Synchronicity
Effect without a cause
Sub-atomic laws, scientific pause
Synchronicity…

Bob Dylan in Tangled up in Blue expresses synchronicity perfectly …
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And everyone of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin’ coal
Pourin’ off of every page
Like it was written in my soul
From me to you
Tangled up in blue
Elkhart Tolle, a spiritual teacher, has the combined humbleness and wisdom that reflects it – is a found, gifted to us, type of wisdom, simple precedents that build to inner peace. Fame wealth status are worldly chips that don’t bring peace of mind.
Only staying in the now can bring you to that connected non fear oriented presence that every faith is ultimately based on, but isn’t highlighted near enough. In his book, The Power of Now, he extols the most important ways to discern between the various ways we block,  defend and guard ourselves from inner peace, it’s a must do and of course must read.
Synchronicity awakens us to the power of now, it’s the connective tissue that enables realization. Without it we are just cogs in a man made machine, with it we can grasp higher deeper senses of self, and actual destiny.
The riddles of the ages, what did the Buddha find, what was Jesus talking about?  What do the Sufis mean when they report ‘ The Sufi is the son of time present.’ , it is the relationship of the calling nature of synchronicity, how time is suspended and animated thru you.
John Lennon had to stop, get off the hamster wheel so he could. . . ‘just watching the wheels go round and round, no longer in the big time , no longer playing the game.’ He was aware of the need to free himself from the rote existence, the trappings of fame, knowing that in the freedom of spontaneous creativity was where the love of life is found.
Jim Carey too had to really examine life and express the virtues of real knowing. He sees and knows that he was dialed in, causation of the Magi I will call it,  if you haven’t seen his commencement speech for the graduates of the Maharishi University, it’s telling.
So, where can synchronicity moments take us?
The value of recognizing synchronicity in your life can help you move into deeper and higher flow states.  It’s when the ego falls away. Time becomes elongated. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, it’s a lot like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re not using your mind in the traditional way, it’s floating,  staying out of the way.
In Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal’s Book “Stealing Fire” quote Jason Silva. . .
Synchronicity can look like different experiences from the outside, but they feel similar from the inside, it is a shared commonality, a bond linking us all together, the Ecstatis is a language without words that we all speak.
A guidance code for connecting the inner with the outer world, a confirmation that they are indeed on the Path. I use a capital P here, language is a limited tool to convey, the higher transcendental way.
The most important knowledge is to rely on Grace and be ever vigilant to not be deceived by false voices inside your head and not to be deceived by false teachers , man made churches, and not let others lead your soul, to fall prey to ‘bow and pray to neon god they made’ .
It is the path least traveled , the way of the mystic warrior, the rewards are peace of mind, wisdom, that does come with growth pains.
When we experience the Awe of the All, in our naïveté, we crawl, then walk , then fly. To soar by just adjusting our wings on the currents of life, that is the difference between living truly and or sleepwalking, lemming-like to the cliff.
When times are tough how do you hold onto your faith?
The first thing I do is try to stay in the moment and not let my mind run away with fear. Remembering synchronistic points in time, the pre instant energy field zone, the awareness to stay in the moment.
I recently wrote a poem  . . .
The Awe of Reverence
Awe is the way
Striking synapses
Reflecting your essence
Momentary glimpses divine
Waking sleepwalking
Alerting to mortality
Existential knowledge
Sensory tripping
Touching Truths edges
Gnosis the deeper side
Heaven on earth
Breathing the metamorphosis
Being
One
The I am
Therefore   Heretofore
Forever is a loop
Split by matter
Divided by circumstance
Leaving us bewildered
Enchanted
Seeking the soundness
The peace
Of soul shining
In the awe
Of reverence
Revelating reverberating
The signposts of the Master
Maker of time
Blessed Love
Blessed Love
Blessed Love
What do you mean by the “signposts of the master”?
The “signposts of the Master “ are the elevated moments of ecstasy  the spine tingling instants of the consciousness of connecting to the Kingdom of The All. It’s the otherworldly realization that you are gifted to see, know, hear, and be in the presence of a higher deeper consciousness. Testing the spirits and  following signs and wonders in an amazed state of grace.

Synchronicity is akin to an electrical shock, a current flows in that instant. It’s surprising and uncomfortable.

As Ram Dass put it ‘be here be now ‘. That’s the pre-state of mind needed for it to happen. Once you enter the rabbit hole, the looking glass, you get what we need, when we need. The frequency of the improbable and the density of each ‘miracle’, the folding of time, the mental mirroring of place and circumstance, inside and out, that the incarnating moment holds the key. The growth and direction of each individual breakthrough leads and draws you to question. There is a balancing act, between channeling and delirium. Obsession and submission, the need for ritual and cadence to support the shedding of some of our rational constructs, breaking down of conceptual structures, so they can be filled by our soul jist.
Here are lines from the song Ripple, written by Garcia and Hunter that express the path to enlightenment, the wonder of you finding your way.
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone
Just remember you come into this world alone, you go out alone, it’s your job to put the pieces together to find your place, but also that you are not alone, you were created to create, and find that you are a piece of a grand design, the intuitive, synchronicity spaces are the launch points for your awakening.
13
How have these synchronistic moments, these meaningful coincidences changed your life?
Understanding magic has been my entire life, they have been what has made my life richer, made me feel unique, energized and when in the zone, extra alive. It was like the opening of the Star Track series, “Space the final frontier, to go where no man has gone before”, it made me an explorer of sorts.
In college I studied history and focused on the existential thinkers of the renaissance and beyond which helped me understand the experiences I was having were shared by others . True it felt at times as if I was a hapless , hopeless , romantic, but delving into the nomenclature and works of great sages like Kierkegaard , Nietzshe, and Rousseau was a realization that there were others throughout History, who wrestled with the ultimate Holy Grail question, what’s the meaning of life, from their rhetoric, and metaphors I could “see” they had synchronistic, illogical dances with the strange.
Hesse and  Heidegger and for God sakes, most  poets are blazing the dance with the uncanny altered states of consciousness, that the awareness of synchronicity compels and leads to ecstasis and epiphanies. Homo sapiens have been defined as a species, as such at the time when the art on the cave walls suggested the other side of the veil.
Basically there’s hidden esoteric truth that coordinates messages from the other side with the day-to-day needs of the tribe. For forty years I have participated in the psychedelic, tribal, ritual, dance parties, what I call the modern mystery school, known as The Grateful Dead; and subsequent iterations Further , Rat Dog, Phil and Friends, Dead and Co,  which exist as a traveling acid test, burning man like mindset, and three ring circus all rolled into a musical mysterium, that became for me a place to dance a shaman trance to free myself into the now. I’m basically a freak of nature and a freak and not afraid to call it like I see it.
What was your first synchronistic moment?
Well the strange has been layered in since birth but an early alarm bell went off in the Spring of 1978, a senior in high school and  was asked by a friend if I wanted to go to a concert that night, told him I wasn’t sure, I’d let him know in a half hour. I went to my room, turned on the radio and thought do I feel like going to the show? I put the question in my mind, should I go or not? the artist came on the radio, right at that second, and the song title and words beckoned, in that synchro spot. It was just an odd fit, at the time, I dialed it up to a random thing that was unique, it didn’t blow me away, it was a taster, a firstling, yet over time, later, looking back at it, it was a early stepping stone, a touch stone, of “I’ve been here before”, a deja vu like thing, to trust the intuitive, something inside me knows better. The awakening of true self or learning to ride inside in a different way.
You referenced “Striking synapses” in the poem “Awe of reverence”.  How does this reflect your essence’?
That is that the speed of light , the speed of thought , which I equate with light , probably because of a cartoon picture imbedded in my youth that shows a lightbulb over a cartoon characters head to signify an idea, and the almost instantaneous reflection in something seen and or something heard that leaves no doubt that you are vibrating in that zone of awareness that you’re in that synchronistic place that defies reason and creates the humility of the channeler, that you are again in the Mystery School just registering the experience.
I love the scene in an old movie where Steve Martin asks for a sign, any kind of sign, the sky opens up and lightning is filling the horizon. He continues as if nothing happened the sky is opening up and lightning is striking, thundering crashes, and he is so focused on what’s on his mind as if nothing happened, he asks for a sign – the heavens open up, the punchline, immediately after he screams, “Just any kind of sign .
Priceless! Sometimes we are going to do what we are going to do no matter what, the lessons usually come after. There are three states of mind; pre thought, present thought, and after thought. For enlightened mind framers; prescient (forecasting) channeling ( meditating) and wisdom (research = what was that? for we are either planning, doing, and or resting.) If we can find the place where we can rest in the now, then we can find peace.
What does “stay close to your faith” mean to you ?
The simple affirmation of realizing your a part of a greater whole, that God is in charge of your place, that it all is going to workout for the best  as long as I am and remain steadfast in being honest with others and myself and remain as selfless as possible.
The mantra is based on he who pushes to be first will be last, he who serves others before oneself will find peace. It’s the Christ consciousness, don’t judge, lest you will be judged, you must be like a child to get it, eager, free and open, curious, trusting, and a faith that it’s all gonna be All Right.
Another Poem.
The Awaiting
Free will pre destined
The fabric of you
To know to be
Be fore
Mystery of dream
Colliding with the lucid
Transforming reason
To mystic bursts
Forming numerology
Snowflake unique
Just for you
Timing midnight
Full moon tide
Oh watchman
Alert and alive
Awaiting knowing
The work that is
Awaiting knowing
Born into
Bred into
Every strand
For realization
Of the eternal structure
Reincarnating reinventing
Sublime targets in time
Only for you
Only cause of you
Only One mystery
Dual for attention
The preachers bark
The dogma bite
Fall short of the everness
Yet start somewhere
You must
To know the space between
Where you begin and the all ends
It’s the riddle of life
The secret of death
The buddhas song
The Masters cry
The alpha
The omega
The beta of existence
Awaiting knowing
Your calling
That what you are
Always and all ways
Majestic creation
Awaiting release
Awaiting understanding
Awaiting freedom
